When to Invest in AI Search Optimisation, and When to Fix SEO First

A competitor appearing in an AI answer can make a new marketing service feel urgent. Before committing to AI search optimisation services, establish whether the business has a visibility problem that this work can realistically address. The right timing depends on the questions customers ask, the condition of the website and the value of other improvements competing for the same budget.

Establish whether the questions matter commercially

Begin with situations in which customers genuinely need help comparing options. A specialist supplier may receive detailed questions about compatibility or delivery conditions; a local business may depend more heavily on location and immediate availability. These situations justify different research, and neither should be reduced to asking a chatbot for a generic list of leading brands.

Review a small sample of relevant answers and talk to customers or sales colleagues about how they research purchases. The aim is to find a plausible connection between AI visibility and the buying process. One favourable or unfavourable result is too little evidence to determine a whole marketing budget.

Fix barriers that prevent useful pages being found

For Google’s generative search features, familiar SEO requirements still matter, including indexing and snippet eligibility. If an important service page is unavailable to search systems or carries an unintended indexing restriction, correct that before paying to expand the content around it. The obstacle is already identifiable.

Other problems concern usefulness rather than access. A page might describe a product without explaining its specifications or who it suits. Improving that page can support ordinary search, AI discovery and the customer who visits directly, which makes it a stronger starting point than producing unrelated articles simply to increase output.

Check whether more attention would produce better enquiries

Visibility is only part of the commercial decision. If visitors already reach the right pages but cannot find a clear offer or submit a working enquiry, additional exposure may have limited value. Review the journey from landing page to contact, including the version used on a phone.

Consider two businesses with the same marketing budget. One has a useful website and wants to understand why its expertise is absent from relevant comparisons. The other has broken forms and outdated service details. A focused AI visibility project may suit the first, while the second has more immediate work that could benefit every visitor.

Define what an AI-focused project would add

Ask for a clear distinction between existing SEO activity and the proposed additional work. Useful additions could include researching customer questions across named services, checking how the brand is described and finding evidence gaps in important pages. The proposal should say which observations will lead to an actual change.

An unfamiliar label does not make a task new. If content improvements and technical reviews are already funded, identify the extra work before paying for an overlapping package. Equally, do not assume all platforms behave like Google; the service should explain which systems it will assess and the limits of that assessment.

Test a manageable area with a defined review point

A pilot can focus on one product group or a small set of valuable customer questions. Record the starting position, agree the changes and assign responsibility for implementation. Review mentions, linked pages and accuracy alongside any relevant referral visits or enquiries that can be observed.

Results should be interpreted cautiously. Answers can change for reasons unrelated to the website edits, and a brief observation period may contain very little usable data. Agree in advance what would justify continuing, changing direction or stopping, and allow enough time for the work to be published and assessed.

Match the investment to implementation capacity

Even a well-designed project can stall if nobody can supply technical information, approve copy or update the website. Budget for those contributions as well as the external service. A business with limited capacity may make better progress by resolving a few high-value issues before expanding the programme.

There is no need to wait for a flawless website, but there should be a credible reason for the next piece of work. Choose the activity that addresses the clearest commercial obstacle and produces improvements the team can maintain. Google’s explanation of how established SEO practices apply to generative search provides a useful basis for judging proposals without treating AI visibility as a separate route around the fundamentals.
